It is important that children develop good eating habits at an early age. Eating preferences that children develop in childhood will follow them for a lifetime. Diet also plays an important factor in children’s growth, development, and overall health. So, it is vital that parents teach their young children proper eating habits.

One of the main reasons to encourage your children to eat right is to prevent obesity in both childhood and adulthood. Diets that focus more on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains help to prevent disease and encourage lifelong healthy eaters. Parents should begin to introduce their children to a healthy lifestyle as early as possible. The challenge for parents is to get their young children develop a preference for the right foods at an early age. So, what can a parent do?

A child’s parents are his first role models. So, the best thing that parents can do to encourage their young children to eat healthy is to eat healthy themselves. Their children should see their parents eating fruits and vegetables and leading an active lifestyle.

Parents can start by preparing more meals at home. This will decrease the amount of fast food consumed. Fast food is loaded with salt, grease, and fat. By cooking at home parents will be able to control the amount of fat, salt, and sugar in their child’s diet.

Carbonated sodas are loaded with sugar and empty calories. Parents should encourage their children to drink milk and fruit juice instead of carbonated sodas.

Parents of young children need to limit the amount of sugar their children consume. Parents can provide their children with healthy snacks. They can substitute fruit for sugary snacks.

Parents should also learn the correct portions to give their children. This will ensure that young children don’t get into the habit of overeating.

Getting young children to eat right does not have to be a struggle. Parents should model good eating habits. And, they can offer their children healthy snacks. They can also mix vegetables in meats, create smoothies, and add them to stews.
