Products you should use when Pregnant and Fighting Blemishes

Pregnancy is a beautiful time in a woman’s life and typically, women who are pregnant do all that they can to protect their unborn baby from things that may hurt them while they are in her belly. However, some women do not realize that the things they use to treat their acne could be harming their little one.

Blemishes are as much a part of pregnancy for some women as morning sickness or swollen ankles, especially during the first trimester when the mom-to-be’s hormone level is going so crazy, which can increase oil production in the body. It is a very common annoyance and some people are misled by all those Clearasil or Oxy10 commercials that promise clearer skin on those young teens and they do work fine for most people.

Pregnancy changes all of that though, and there are many things that are completely safe to use during pregnancy. Some acne treatments are not and it is those that should be avoided completely during pregnancy or you are taking a huge risk with the life inside of your belly.

Most over-the-counter acne treatments have two main ingredients in them; Benzoyl Peroxide and salicylic acid. The Benzoyl Peroxide has been tested and it is completely safe for a pregnant woman to use. Salicylic acid however has a few restrictions placed on it. If salicylic acid is taken orally it can cause some birth defects or complicate the pregnancy in some other way.

The problem comes due to the fact that most Benzoyl Peroxide products also contain a small amount of Salicylic acid. If you are wondering what the topical application of salicylic acid can do, rest assured it has not been proven that it will cost birth defects. Some women would rather not risk it since there is proof you can’t take it orally.

Other types of acne treatment products doctors recommend a pregnant woman should avoid is products that contain retinoid taken orally, it is a form of Vitamin A that can cause birth defects, and Accutane. Once again there is no proof that topical retinoid is harmful, but for some mommy’s-to-be, they would rather not take the chance.

The pregnant woman who has extremely bad acne or can’t wait to get the healthy pregnancy glow can also try to use a variety of very safe, natural acne treatments rather than load up on chemicals. You should consult your doctor before trying anything new, but you do have options.

These all natural types of acne treatment can include Echinacea, Lavender Essential Oil, or Tea Tree Oil. You can also control outbreaks by keeping your skin clean. Washing with soap and then rinsing with warm water is the best natural way to help you eliminate the extra oil and potential blemishes. It is important to remember that you should avoid picking or popping at your acne if you want to prevent scars.

You should also take a look at your diet because it can also influence how well you can control your acne flair-ups. Eating a high fruit/vegetable ratio can control acne. This should be done even if you have no acne issues because it will also benefit your baby’s growth and development while still in the womb. Apples and blueberries are both filled with antioxidants which will help remove toxins from your skin that cause outbreaks.

If no apples or blueberries are available and you want your acne gone as quickly as possible, there are also many household items you can use to treat it. For instance:

Make a mask of warm oatmeal. It should be cooked, without other ingredients and then applied to your face. Leave it on for 15-20 minutes and you could see clearer skin in as little as a few days.

You can also use a lemon half.

Olive Oil

Mashed potato mask

Warm sugar water

It is easy to go natural with your skin care, and you won’t have to worry about causing harm to your unborn child. When Mother Nature gives you blemishes and you’ve had enough of dealing with it during pregnancy, have patience and go au natural. Eat a healthier diet filled with low fat and preservative free foods and try to avoid products that claim they can clear up your face in just five days. The little life you are carrying will thank you for it when they are born healthy and happy!
