Possible Reasons for Late Menstrual Period

Every woman is a little different. The average menstrual cycle lasts between 28 days (from the start of your period to the start of the next one). However, normal ranges last between 18 days and 35 days. There are lots of reasons to miss a period or to be late for one.

New to the Game.
The first three or four years of your period may be a hit and miss type of menstruation. This usually has to do with the development of the hormones and the cycles. If you were regular though, then you might want to look for another issue.

Pregnancy.
Pregnancy is the most common reason to be late for a period or to miss one completely. If you are sexually active (even if you are using birth control methods) then you should take a pregnancy test. It is possible that you are pregnant.

After Pregnancy.
It often takes at least a few months for your cycle to return after having a baby, abortion, or miscarriage. This is due to the hormone levels returning to normal.

Breastfeeding.
Breastfeeding often causes periods to lag behind or disappear for a time all together. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t get pregnant!

Weight Fluctuations.
Loosing weight or gaining it rapidly can cause a shift in your hormones. This shift can cause you to miss a period or to have your cycle change some.

Stress.
Stress is a very popular reason that women miss their period (or have it late). Stress has a very negative effect on the body and can cause disruptions to hormone cycles. This can include emotional stress and depression.

Exercise.
Exercise doesn’t normally cause a loss of period until a great deal of body fat has been loss. However, a sudden change in exercising can cause a shift in when the period comes or can cause you to miss one.

Diet.
Diets should be well balanced to remain healthy. It is possible for dieting to effect when or if a period comes. Malnutrition can cause a woman to stop having a period. This includes if a woman is struggling with an eating disorder.

Hormone Imbalance.
There are several issues that can cause hormone imbalances. These things can include polycystic ovary syndrome, or problems of the thyroid gland, pituitary gland, adrenal glands, or ovaries.

Injury or Illness.
Injury and illness can cause a woman to miss her period or to find it late. This is true if there is sever trauma or long term illness associated with the time frame.

If you miss your period for three or more months in a row or are experiencing other symptoms, seek out a doctor. There are lots of things he may want to look into to make sure you are okay. It is important to take care of yourself, so don’t continue to ignore the issues.
