In today’s society, more and more women are making the decision to delay marriage and childbirth. Many of these women want to focus on their careers, travel, or simply enjoy life independently before “settling down.” However, when women over the age of 35 make the decision to become mothers, there are number of issues and challenges that they must face. Be aware

First and foremost, women over the age of 35 who are not yet pregnant but wish to become so, should be completely aware of the physical and health-related risks that they may be exposed to during their pregnancies. Pregnant women over the age of 35 are more prone to miscarriages, fetal distress, high blood pressure, ectopic pregnancy, diabetes, premature delivery, and mandatory cesarean birth. Moreover, even if the pregnancy goes considerably well, the baby is still at a higher risk for genetic disorders, brain bleeds, asphyxia, and low birth weight. While these risks are certainly scary, it does not mean that women over the age of 35 can’t or shouldn’t get pregnant – just be aware of the risk factors and be sure that you take adequate measures to ensure that you reduce your risks as much as possible by working closely with a physician.

Become a planner

Women over the age of 35 becoming first-time mothers should also become planners. Ideally, before you become pregnant, you should be sure that you have sufficient healthcare and adequate financial resources to ensure that your baby is well taken care of. Plan for your pregnancy by working closely with your physician or asking your family doctor for a referral to an obstetrician who works specifically with high-risk pregnancies. These physicians will likely be equipped to provide you with prenatal screening tests that can help identify any risks to genetic disorders that your baby may have should you become pregnant. Thereafter, you should also begin to develop a nutrition and health plan so that you can tailor your diet and exercise routine to decrease your risk factors and increase your own health and well-being.

Be prepared

Regardless of age, most parents should at least be somewhat concerned about the future, particularly their children’s futures. Mothers over 35 should be aware that while they may be physically fit, healthy, and “in shape,” aging is a reality. Older parents should ensure that they make any necessary preparations in the event of illness or death. Visit an attorney and be sure that you make decisions about legal guardianship, life insurance plans, and financial support for your child(ren) if you are incapable of providing for them.

Live healthily

Arguably one of the most important pieces of advice for mothers over the age of 35 is to live healthily. Reduce your health risks by avoiding alcohol, abstaining from smoking cigarettes, and not taking illegal drugs like narcotics. Keep in mind how old you will be when your child becomes a teenager. If you want to have the energy and stamina to keep up with your teen(s) later in your life, then you are going to need to take the necessary steps to ensure that you are in tip-top shape physically, mentally, and emotionally. Be sure that you follow a healthy, nutritious diet and that you exercise regularly before, during, and after your pregnancy.

Overall, it is important to note that the percentage of mothers over the age of 35 continues to rise in America. Therefore, while there may be specific challenges and tough issues to be faced by these women, it is by no means impossible to be an excellent, healthy, and effective mother over 35.
