La Leche League Historical and Contemporary Support for Moms

Breastfeeding was the only option at one point in history, and for some, it’s the only option still. There is a plan that is different and right for everyone.

Historically, breastfeeding has been a fashion decision. In some time periods it was “in” to nurse your baby, and others times not. Currently it’s pretty big. Luckily, La Leche League International has been around for a while supporting moms of all different types. They have helped first time nursing mothers, second time moms nursing for the first time, and successful nursing moms having trouble the second time around!

La Leche means “the milk.” LLLI provides group meetings, personal home visits by trained lactation specialists, books and other materials, baby slings and other help for nursing mothers all over the world. LLLI typically supports complete breastfeeding, without supplementation with formula, water or food. This may work for some and not for others. You will have to personally decide what will work for you, and LLLI group leaders are a great resource.

Group meetings welcome pregnant women as well as breastfeeding mothers. You can hear and learn from others experiences, and ask questions or pose problems of your own. Group is a welcome relief for the woman who feels like the crying baby or need to nurse is bothersome in the course of the day. Here, you can nurse your baby in the comfort of others doing the same, and it feels good to take the baby with you and not be bothered with whatever else you are trying to do. There is no need to find a babysitter so you can have some time to benefit yourself!

A group leader came to my home to assist with my second child who was having latch on problems, after I had a completely enjoyable and successful 11 months nursing my first child. I didn’t think I needed help since I had nursed before, and it didn’t seem to help when she told me to “just keep trying.” Eventually we worked it out and I am so glad I did not give up.

I have benefited greatly from “The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding”, a LLLI book, and their magazine subscription too. The few meetings I was able to fit into my busy schedule were extremely helpful, for information, and for sure the sharing with other mothers. I purchased my baby sling at one of the meetings, and of course the leader that came to my home for absolutely no charge.

La Leche League is the leading source for information and support for breastfeeding moms around the world, now and for all of history.
