How to Induce Labor Naturally

According to Dr. Beth Burch, 10 percent of women deliver on or before her due date and 80 percent of women deliver a week after her due date.  Around this time women are very anxious to meet the little bundle of joy.  Many women are open to natural induction by power walking, sexual relations, stimulation of breast or nipples, or herbs.  Before considering any of these natural inductions, consult a physician to ensure the pregnancy is normal and none of these remedies will harm the baby or mommy.

Power Walking

A woman who is 9 months pregnant is probably not eager to power walk. According to Heidi Murkoff power walking helps bring the baby down into the pelvis. Once baby is down in the pelvic area it may be enough to start the labor process. With any type of exercise especially when pregnant, stop walking if dizziness occurs or any pain besides contractions occurs. These could be signs of something wrong with the pregnancy or a hydration problem is occurring.

Sexual Relations

Sex is probably the last thing on a woman’s mind when ankles are swollen and the extra weight is not helping in getting in to the mood. Sex could be the trick to triggering that labor.  According to Heidi Murkoff, sperm contains prostaglandins which are hormones that can help thin and dilate the cervix.  Not only does the sperm play a part in triggering labor, but when a woman has an orgasm oxytocin is released and this will cause the uterus to contract. Sperm and oxytocin together can kick start labor into high gear.

Stimulation of Breast or Nipples

Breast or nipple stimulation can be harmful to the pregnancy if a woman is less than 39 weeks. Not only do orgasms cause oxytocin to release in the body, but so does nipples or breast stimulation.  This method of natural induction can bring on powerful contractions, so be ready for that if this method works.  According to cafe mom, apply a warm compress on the breast, uncover and use a breast pump to stimulate the nipple for 15 minutes, remove pump and repeat procedure on other breast and alternate breasts until strong regular contractions happen.

Herbs

Many midwives, who practice holistic medicines, believe that some type of herbs will induce labor naturally.  According to Maternity Acupressure, cumin tea is a good herb to induce labor.  Add 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds and 1 cup of boiling water, steep for 5 minutes and drink. Do not drink more than 1 cup an hour per day.  After drinking the tea contractions should start. Like with any herbal medicines, ask a physician before proceeding to use this method of natural induction.
