Ovarian cancer affects fertility in various ways. This is attributed to the role ovaries play in the fertility process. The ovary has two important duties. First, they produce estrogen and progesterone which help to manage periods. Second, they reserve your eggs. Each month, one of the ovaries disperses an egg which moves down the fallopian tubes to the uterus. Once it arrives it could be fertilized by the sperm and develop into an infant.

What is ovarian cancer?

Ovarian cancer is a cancer that originates in the ovaries. They are the reproductive glands found only in women. They produce eggs for reproduction.

Ovaries encompass three types of tissue. They are epithelial cells and they cover the ovary. Germ cells are found within the ovary. These cells cultivate into the eggs that are dispersed into the fallopian tubes every month. Stromal cells create most of the female hormones estrogen and progesterone. Fertility can be affected when malignancies develop within these tissues.

Types of Ovarian Tumors

Many kinds of tumors can start developing in the ovaries. The majority of these are non cancerous and never increase beyond the ovary.

Generally speaking, ovarian tumors are names according to the type of cells the tumor originated from and whether the tumor is benign or malignant. There are three kinds of ovarian tumors.

Epithelial tumors begin from the cells that cover the outer layer of the ovary. Most ovarian tumors are epithelial cells tumors.

Germ cell tumors begin from the cells the produce the eggs.

Stoma tumors begin from connective tissue cells that bond the ovary together and create the female hormones estrogen and progesterone.

The majority of epithelial tumors are not cancerous and do not spread to cause serious sicknesses.

Some epithelial tumors are considers to be low malignant potential or ( LPM) tumors. These tumors are distinct from typical ovarian cancers in that they do not grow into the surrounding supporting of the ovary.

Carcinomas are called cancerous epithelial tumors. Approximately 85% to 90% of ovarian cancers are epithelial ovarian carcinomas. Other types of these are called mutinous, endometriosis and clear cell. This is the most serious type that will inhibit the fertility process. In some cases, the entire ovary will need to be removed for the woman’s protection.

A cancer that affects the fertilization process will make it difficult for a woman to have children. The way to prevent this or thwart the development of ovarian cancer is to get yearly physical examinations. The sooner it is caught, the better of the woman will be.
