Fertility Infertility Issues

Thriving with polycystic ovarian syndrome does NOT begin and end with metformin and glucophage. In fact, these medications are often used indiscriminately by physicians too busy to actually treat the myriad hormonal imbalances affecting a polycystic woman.

In fact, the diagnosis itself is problematic since it is really just a term used to mean a cluster of symptoms with no identifiable single cause. If you have been given this diagnosis recently, consider asking the following of your doctor: first, get all of your reports in hand; second, ask to see your leutenizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, thyroid, estrogen and progesterone numbers. Third ask to see them compared to that of a non-polycystic woman your age. Ask for alternatives to metformin. And most importantly, do not accept flip advice to go back on the birth control pill or change your diet and it will all go away.

If you have the diagnosis its just the beginning of a long road, but it doesn’t have to be miserable. If you are uncomfortable with holistic medicine, find a reproductive endocrinologist who has the time and energy to work with you. If you are open to alternative medicine, seek out a naturopath and acupuncturist and take your reports.

In addition to finding the right medical care, its also time to consider major lifestyle changes. What American physicians never tell you is that the causes of polycystic ovarian syndrome, syndrome X and syndrome O all have their roots in lifestyle issues. Lack of excercise combined with industrial processed food have served to erase millions of years of evolutionary biology and replace it with malfunctioning ovaries, pituitary glands, and thyroids.

If its within your reach, hire a personal trainer. If its not, find a way to get serious about excercise. Eliminate white foods from your diet, that means refined flour, sugar and excess salt. Eat by this simple rule, if you can identify the commercial associated with the food, DON’T EAT IT! Advertised food is bad. Processed food is bad. Fast food is garbage. They’ve already worked to take your womanhood, its time to fight back.
