Fertility Advice for Women with Irregular Periods

Sub-fertility is one of the commonest gynecological problems that females experience. Thousands of couples seek medical advice each year for sub-fertility. Sub-fertility is defined as failure to conceive after having regular sexual intercourse for one year duration. They have found out that only 85% of the healthy couples succeed in getting pregnant within one year. The rates for those with any physical or mental illness will be far less than this. Therefore, if you wish to get pregnant in the near future, you should pay attention to your illnesses and get them corrected.

Menstrual irregularities are common gynecological problems. Both physical and mental illnesses can cause irregular periods. The most important thing is to find out the cause for irregular menstruation. Sometimes it is due to an underlying pathology and sometimes the cause cannot be found. The commonest cause for irregular menstruation is polycystic ovarian syndrome. Other causes are severe illness, mental stress, lack of sleep, sudden weight loss, and rarely endocrine problems and brain tumors. You don’t have to be alarmed just because you have irregular menstruation, but you should immediately see a doctor, if you have other symptoms such as sudden weight loss, headache, visual disturbances etc.

If you have irregular menstruation and trying to get pregnant, the following steps might help you to achieve your goal.

Consult a Doctor

The best step to start is seeing a doctor. He will briefly take a history and do some tests if required. These basic investigations will help to find out any underlying pathology, if there is any. If not, he will give you general advice about getting pregnant. This is called pre-pregnancy counseling. These advices are very important to have a healthy baby. He will counsel you regarding vaccination and vitamin supplementation, especially folic acid.

Maintain a Healthy Weight

Maintaining a healthy weight is important for your general health. If you are obese, your menstrual irregularities will get correct on its own once you bring down your weight to the normal range. What is the normal range? This is measured by calculating the BMI (Body Mass Index). It is calculated by dividing your weight from the square of your height in meters. The normal range for a woman is between 18.5-24.9 kg/m2.

Eat Healthy Foods

Vitamins and minerals are very important to be fertile. Having a good supply of vitamins and minerals protect you against many illnesses and thereby, increases your chances of getting pregnant.

Be Physically and Mentally Fit

If you have any other illness, take your medicines regularly and get it under controlled as much as possible. This is very important in people who have diabetes. If you have diabetes and expecting a child, you should immediately consult your doctor and take necessary steps to optimize your blood sugar levels.

The next most important thing is to be happy. Your mental status has a great effect on your physical status as well as your fertility. Depression and sadness affects the hypothalamus which regulates the menstrual cycles.

Have Regular Intercourse

Last but not the least requirement to get pregnant is to have regular intercourse. To get pregnant the sperm from your partner should meet your egg. Therefore, the intercourse should occur at the time of your ovulation. In a woman having regular 28 day cycles, this occurs at the mid cycle. But in those with irregular cycles, it occurs 14 days prior to the next expected day of menstruation. This is very hard to calculate. Therefore, if you maintain regular intercourse, it will increase your chances of getting pregnant. Regular intercourse means having sexual intercourse 3-4 times a week.

Ninety nine percent of women get pregnant within two years. Therefore, there is a high chance for you to get pregnant even though you have irregular menstruation. Therefore, always have faith and always stay happy. One day you will be lucky enough to hold your baby!
