Exercising for new Parents

Time may be precious and short when you have a newborn, but you should still make time to get exercise. Exercise can help you lose weight, get fit and lower stress. You may be able to better take care of your baby if you feel like you are taking care of yourself. There are various ways that you can fit in exercise even with a newborn.

Fit in exercise at home while your baby naps

You do not need to exercise for an hour straight in order to get a benefit. You can get heart-healthy benefits from cardio as long as it is at least 10 minutes. You might be able to fit in 10 minutes here and there while your baby is sleeping.

Buy some exercise equipment for the house. You can get a treadmill, stationary bike or elliptical trainer to get in cardio exercise and a weight machine or free weights for weight training. Get a baby monitor so that you can hear the baby, and fit in your exercising when you can. 

Join a moms’ walking group

Many parks, communities and private groups offer stroller walks. These may occur in parks or other natural areas. You can put your newborn in the stroller and power walk with others. Because you are doing it in a group, you will stay more motivated. Some of them cost money but they are often very reasonable.

Of course you can always put together your own such group. If you have friends with babies, then you can get together with them to do walking. Perhaps you can organize a moms’ club playdate that involves walking. In addition, you can always do it on your own. If it is cold you can walk in a mall or another indoor area.

Find a “mommy and me” exercise class

Some gyms and schools offer “mommy and me” exercise classes. You can practice stretching or do other exercises while with your baby. Make sure that you find out the recommended age for the baby.

Find a gym with babysitting

A lot of gyms offer babysitting. Check the age of the kids that they accept into the babysitting. This is sometimes included in the cost of your membership and other times just costs a nominal fee.

Of course you could also try to sneak out for an hour while your spouse or another relative is watching the baby. With all its benefits, exercise is important for new parents.
