Effects of Drug Abuse on Sperm Production

When guys are having fun partying and doing drugs I’m pretty sure they never stop and think how is this affecting my sperm. Overexposure to certain environmental elements are causes of male infertility such as abnormal sperm production or function and impaired delivery of sperm. Drugs such as marijuana, steroids, ecstasy and alcohol can all impact a mans health in many ways. It greatly affects the testicular function of producing sperm and causes birth defects in babies.

Research shows that men who smoke have fewer sperm to ejaculate and secondhand smoke is dangerous for a pregnant woman and the fetus. Marijuana use can be linked with a reduction in sperm count and seminal fluid. The sperm behavior of men who regularly smoke marijuana has been found to be abnormal which means that the sperm has problems swimming as well as penetrating the egg. Also common in men who habitually smoke marijuana are lower testosterone levels. A normal testosterone level is vital to the production of sperm, regular use of marijuana can cause this process to become hindered.

Illegal drugs such as cocaine affect the brain chemistry responsible for releasing reproductive hormones. Cocaine in particular has been shown to significantly impact a man’s fertility and contributes to birth defects in children. Men who use cocaine have been found to have lower sperm counts, reduced sperm motility, as well as an increase the amount of abnormal sperm. Narcotics like heroin, amphetamines, cocaine and PCP are also linked with a decrease in libido, erectile dysfunction and ejaculatory problems. Heroin, as well as other drugs, have been shown to disrupt normal hormone production causing diminished LH and testosterone levels. Being that both of these hormones are needed in order for the male reproductive system to function properly and for healthy sperm development this is a serious problem.

Anabolic steroids which are taken to stimulate muscle strength and growth can cause the testicles to shrink and sperm production to decrease. Men who inappropriately use testosterone and stronger androgen’s for body building and competitive sports, can not only become infertile, but also place other aspects of their health at risk. In studies of male bodybuilders you will find that more than half had testicular atrophy, and alot more had gynecomastia. Gynecomastia which is thought to occur due to the disruption of normal hormone balance.

Any man that is engaging in any of this behavior should stop when trying to conceive. Although pregnancy might not occur as soon as they stop because it takes the body three months to produce sperm. The damages done to the reproductive system already can last long after drugs have stopped being used. In conclusion if you want to have a healthy baby one day please don’t use drugs.
