Best Time of Month to get Pregnant

When at school we are taught that you can become pregnant by having sex at any time during your menstrual cycle but actually this isn’t the case, there is only a small window during a menstrual cycle in which the female is fertile and so if you are planning to concieve it is vital that you have sex during this time.

When are you most fertile?

The most fertile time during the menstrual cycle is when the egg is released from the ovary and this is called ovulation. This usually occurs 14 days after the last period. It is important that when ovulation occurs if you are wanting to get pregnant that there is sperm present so it can fertilise this egg.

How do you work out when you are ovulating?

A menstrual cycle is usually 28 days long although it can be a bit shorter or longer but the average woman has a 28 day cycle. Day 1 is the day that the period first comes properly (the day that there is bright red blood, not spotting) and it is usually half way through the cycle on day 14 that ovulation happens. There are various signs that you can look out for which will help you know if you are ovulating. Sometimes you will be able to feel cramps low down around your pelvis on one side, this usually lasts about 15-20 minutes and is most common during the early evening. You can also look for changes in your vaginal discharge. At the beginning of your cycle vaginal discharge is usually thick and white but when you are ovulating this changes to being clear and stretchy, after ovulation it will become clear and watery. If you want to pinpoint the exact time when you are ovulating you can buy ovulation prediction kits which involve you urinating on a stick and the display showing you if you are ovulating or not.

So when is the best time to have sex?

Although day 14 is the most fertile day for a woman it is important that sperm is already present so that it can fertilise the egg once it is released and so it is advised that you have sex for a few days up until and including day 14. Sperm can stay alive inside a woman for up to five days, whilst an egg only stays alive for 12 hours so it is advised that sexual intercouse occurs from around day 10 to day 15. You do not need to have sex every day, in fact, it is suggested that you have a day or so rest between having sex so that the sperm has had chance to build up and be good quality. Likewise though it’s important not to abstain from sex during the rest of the cycle as this can lead to the sperm being poor quality. If you have sex just once inside the 5 day fertile window described above it can be enough to make conception happen as afterall it only takes one sperm to fertilise the egg.

What if my cycle isn’t regular?

If you don’t have a regular cycle then it can be harder to predict when you are ovulating. Some peoples’ cycles vary in length from month to month and if you have been using the contraceptive pill for a while it can take a few months for your cycle to regulate. If you don’t have a regular cycle then you can use ovulation prediction kits to tell when you are ovulating or you can seek advice from your GP. It is suggested though that if you have sex two or three times every week then the chances of you hitting your fertile window and thus concieving are very high.

To have a healthy relationship it’s a good idea to have regular sex anyway so that you are not only partaking in this activity as a baby making method but also as a way to express love. If you have regular sex chances are that you will be able to concieve without pinpointing your fertile days but if you do want to establish the best time to have sex then you need to work out when it is that you are fertile so this is the days before and including ovulation. If you write on your calendar the day 1 of your cycle then you will soon see patterns emerging so it can be easier to pinpoint your ovulation date.

In conclusion then the best time of the month to get pregnant is during ovulation which is usually day 14 of the menstrual cycle although this may vary if your cycle is not 28 days. You can use ovulation prediction kits and other ways to tell when ovulation is happening.
