Basic Equipment for Bottle Feeding your Child

For expectant parents, getting ready for the new baby can be a daunting task. It seems the list of things needed for your child is endless. To help ease some of the confusion here is a list of basic essentials for bottle feeding your child:

First on the list is bottles, this sounds simple until you get to the baby isle and see all the different types of bottles. Rule of thumb is to keep it simple, which ever brand of bottle you decide on stick with it that way all of your rings and nipples fit the different size bottles. You will need to buy different size bottles for all your needs because they will be used for more than just formula or breast milk, you will use them for juice, water and sometimes even water soluble medicines. I would also suggest that you buy extra nipples and rings. These two items seem to disappear or the baby bottle fairies come and get them. So having extra rings and nipples at home and in your bag can be a real life saver.

The next thing you need to take care of is cleaning your bottles. There are two great gadgets to wash your baby bottles with. The first is a bottle brush. This is a long cylinder brush that fits into the bottle to clean the inside. This gets the rings of milk out or anything that may be stuck inside the bottle. It’s also great to use in narrow glasses that you can’t get your hands into. You really should get two of these brushes one for home and one to go into the baby bag. The other gadget goes into your dishwasher, it’s a bottle rack this thing is great it sits in the top rack of the dishwasher and the bottles go into it upside down, but the best part is the caddy. The caddy holds the rings and nipples so they can be washed and sanitized but they don’t end up in the bottom of the dishwasher and you have to go fishing them out.

For those of you that are planning to breast feed using a breast pump is a must. Most bottles attach easily to the pumps. This option is great to help bond the baby with the rest of the family and it gives mom the chance to get a well-deserved break every so often. This is also a great alternative if you are uncomfortable breast feeding in public.  You can get a breast pump from the hospital before you leave or you can get them from almost any baby section in big department stores or baby stores. Talk to your doctor or the nurses about which one would work best for you.

Being a new parent can be scary at times wondering about the little things can get overwhelming. All of the items listed above can be found at just about any department store or baby supply store. You should really think about putting these items on your baby shower list because bottles, nipples, and rings will be used and needed for at least the first year of your child’s life.
