Activities to Avoid during the first Trimester of Pregnancy

The first trimester of pregnancy is the first twelve weeks that a woman carries her baby. This is the most fragile time in the baby’s development and should be handled with caution. A woman is most likely to have a miscarriage during this time and should try to take any possible steps to prevent that.

This doesn’t mean that you have to tiptoe so you don’t shake the baby in your belly or never leave the house. It does mean that you should be a little more careful though. There are a lot of common sense things that are dangerous (whether you are pregnant or not) but for safety’s sake there are activities that you should definitely avoid during the first trimester.

The house won’t clean itself. That’s a given. There is nothing wrong with doing light housework either. You shouldn’t try to move heavy furniture though. It doesn’t matter how bad the floor under the couch needs to be swept. It can wait or someone else can move it for you.

Heavy lifting is not a good idea at all. Set your weight limit to fifteen pounds or less. If it weighs more than a growing infant, don’t bother it. You don’t want to pull a muscle or tear something. Lifting, tugging, and pulling are really too strenuous activities for a woman in her first trimester.

You should act like a lady no matter how hard it is. I don’t mean that you have to curtsey and sit with your legs crossed but you should avoid fights, wrestling, and boxing. Any punch to the stomach isn’t a good one. Don’t take your chances. For now, leave the sparring activities to the men. If it is a passion you can always pick it up after your baby is delivered.

Along those same lines you should avoid dangerous activities such as racing cars and crash derbies. This does not mean that you have to avoid getting in a vehicle altogether. Wrecks happen. That is a chance we take when we get behind the wheel of the car. What we shouldn’t do is thrill-chase and go excessive speeds. This is a very important activity to avoid during the first trimester of pregnancy and always.

Adrenaline rushes can come in many shapes and forms. They should all be avoided during the first trimester. Stay off of roller coasters. Don’t go skydiving or bungee jumping. If you think it could be dangerous exercise on the side of caution. Once you have the baby you can defy whatever law of gravity you choose to. Now is the time to be mature and think about the baby in your womb.

Drugs are a favorite pastime for many people but they really aren’t worth the risks. Your baby could be deformed or stillborn. Do you really think getting high is worth giving your baby a birth defect for? Avoid alcohol, nicotine, and other addictive substances. Your baby can’t decide what it wants in its body. You are in control. Don’t turn your child into an addict before it takes its first breath.

Lots of climbing isn’t always a good thing. You also shouldn’t keep your arms elevated over your head as you could get off balance (doing activities such as washing high windows, cleaning gutters out, or fishing an object off the roof.) There are some people who can’t walk and chew gum at the same time much less stand elevated and risk knocking the wind out of herself and the baby.

Abortion is a choice but it is something I feel should be included on the list of activities to avoid. You may think life will be easier for you without a baby but it doesn’t justify murder. If you don’t want the infant growing inside you give it up to adoption. There are many people in the world that could love and give your child that baby a good home. Don’t let your own selfishness deprive them of that opportunity.

There are women who have done these things and more during a pregnancy and have been just fine. There are also women who have done a lot less and miscarried. It is best to just take it easy and not tempt fate. You never know which direction your body will take and you should want to keep your baby safe.
